The link below directed me to an article that brought Nelda to mind. Nelda truly "listens" when a friend, family member, or casual acquaintance speaks to her. This positive trait is not a result of her loss of eyesight because I was blessed with years of interactions with her prior to eyesight complications.
Nelda not only "listens", but she hears what you are saying in "real time" and beyond. You may ask...."beyond?" Yes, she hears "beyond" the words. The best way I can describe her form of listening is "absorbing". She "absorbs" the speakers message in multi-dimentionally. The utterances, or "words" spoken are received through her ears while the intonation and connotation delivered is absorbed in her spirit, heart, and soul. When an individual speaks to her with no knowledge of her physical condition, they are shocked when they reach out to shake her hand, or hand her something, and she does not respond. This is because her eyes and ears are so securely focused on that individual who is interacting with her. Their reaction is always one of shock combined with a confused look to the individuals standing near her. It is not until they (those individuals with Nelda) explain that she is unable to see... that the person speaking with her regains a look of understanding. They readjust ...slowly returning to a comfort zone.
If we all listened to others and to the world the way Nelda does, there would be no more wars. People would absorb their fellow man's real message as their fellow man would absorb their message in return. This form of clarity would produce PEACE.
