Last Tuesday, June 2, 2009, one friend received devastating news and another friend received a miracle. My administrative colleague, after undergoing a difficult termination of an unviable pregnancy, found out that her beloved Grandmother who was like a mother to her had passed from this life. While at the same time, Nelda received her miracle-her HOPE-as she was blessed with her SIGHT.
The joy in her voice brought chills to every recipient of her joyous phone calls as she shouted, "Are your hands raised? Are you praising our Good God? I CAN SEE!" Perhaps due to my meager faith in comparison to Nelda's faith, I was momentarily speechless. "Could this be real?" But it was her voice, Nelda's voice, and she was shouting praises to God. You must know that Nelda is extremely modest and always humble; however, on this blessed day she was shouting for JOY and praising the Lord. She excitedly said, "Robyn, turn on the channel with Lees Ausley." I turned it on, and from her bed in Premont, Texas Nelda told me what he was wearing. When the screen would change to another shot, she would describe the colors and the shapes. When Lees Ausley returned to the screen, she squealed like a newborn baby as she exclaimed, "He is wearing a hanky...on his jacket...he has a hanky in his coat pocket." Through my tears, I saw the most beautiful, precious, hanky on God's green earth...because I saw it Through Nelda's Eyes. There it was, plain as day, A WHITE HANKY IN HIS POCKET. As Nelda continued her joyous descriptions, my mind crystallized on the fact that we should all be so thankful that we can see the "hankys" of this world. However, in addition to hankys, we can see the sunset, the sunrise, our child's eyes, an exciting sports event, a child's graduation, a tennis match, a field of grain, a storm cloud, and our Good God's many, many miraculous wonders and sites. Through NELDA'S SIGHT... and through a simple white hanky my appreciation for the beauty in everything became accessible, perhaps even tangible.
Our God is so Good, and we must continue to pray for increased research to find a cure for Vonn-Hippel Lindau. Nelda wants a cure for herself, but more than that...she will be content if a cure is found for others. She wants no other human being to have to go through life without seeing the hankys in the world...and celebrating.
